City By The Bay

We were able to visit 21st Amendment Brewery located in South of Market and Magnolia Pub & Brewery in Haight-Ashbury this weekend in S.F.

At 21st Amendment ( http://21st-amendment.com/ ) we had the Bitter American Extra Pale Session Ale which has a nice hop aroma and soft malt finish. Also partook in the Brew Free or Die IPA with an unmistakable upfront hop aroma, which led to a bitter bite, and a clean malt finish. Enjoyed a pairing of meaty onion rings and a tasty Margherita pizza.

The next morning, after waiting 45 minutes for our car from the garage, we built up an appetite and thirst.  Headed over to Magnolia ( http://www.magnoliapub.com/ ) where there was plenty of street parking a block or two away. The Blue Bell Bitter, per waiter is what they are known for, was crisp, coppery, and a finish full of maltiness. The proving ground IPA stood its ground. The food was unique and enjoyable. Thanks for the lively conversation from our new friends and home brewers from Oklahoma!

We were introduced to the Weekapaug Gruit. What did you say? A Gruit? Most of us are accustomed to beer brewed with hops, and usually alot of hops! Yet, there is a whole different way of brewing from years past. Gruit, the herbs, roots, and spices used to preserve brew before hops; provides ales with a distinctive flavor and proprieties.  Tasty! I expect to see more craft brewers and home brewers explore the old, but new again style. ( http://www.gruitale.com/intro_en.htm )
